Cutwright Pipe Calculator

What it does

Cutwright Calculator is a pipe trades calculator for pipefitters, steamfitters, plumbers, sprinkler fitters and welders. It looks and works like a hardware calculator: a dark chassis, real keys and a clear LCD. Enter dimensions the way you read them off the tape, in feet, inches and fractions or in metric.

Worked examples

• Rolling offset. Rolling offset: 24 in set, 13 in roll, 32 in run -> travel 42 1/16.
• Pipe data. 6 in Sch 40 pipe data, OD 6 5/8.
• Drain slope. 1/4 in per ft over 40 ft -> 10 in drop.
• Cut length. 4 in pipe, 36 in centre to centre between 90s -> weld cut 24.
• Metric travel. Metric: 610 mm set at 45 -> travel 863 mm.

How it's calculated

Set SpreadSet / Spread

Stores the typed offset set, or solves it as Set = Travel × sin(angle) from any two of run, travel and angle; shifted gives the parallel cutback = Spread × tan(angle ÷ 2).

Roll AdvanceRoll / Advance

Stores the typed rolling-offset roll, true offset = √(Set² + Roll²); shifted stores or solves the advance = True offset ÷ tan(angle).

Angle Std°Fitting angle / Standard angles

Stores the typed fitting angle, or solves angle = atan(Set ÷ Run), else steps through 45, 22.5, 60, 30, 11.25 and 90 degrees.

Travel CutTravel / Cut length

Travel = Set ÷ sin(angle), or √(Set² + Roll² + Run²) for a rolling offset. Press again to step through run and set.

RunRun

Stores the typed run, or solves Run = Set ÷ tan(angle) from any two of set, travel and angle.

TakeOut ThreadTake-out / Thread makeup

Elbow take-out = R × tan(angle ÷ 2) for the stored size, long radius then short radius; shifted gives NPT makeup L1 then L2.

Slope DropSlope / Drop

Stores the typed slope in inches per foot, or solves Slope = Drop ÷ Run; shifted gives Drop = Run × Slope.

Miter PiecesMiter / Miter pieces

Segmented turn: joint angle = Turn ÷ (2 × (Pieces − 1)), then setback and gore lengths; a typed number sets the piece count.

Size DataPipe size / Pipe data

Stores the typed nominal pipe size, or steps through materials and schedules; shifted shows OD, ID = OD − 2 × Wall and weights.

Flow VolumeFlow velocity / Pipe volume

Velocity = 0.4085 × GPM ÷ ID² feet per second for the typed flow; shifted gives volume = π × ID² ÷ 4 × Run.
